The driver who plowed into a group of young people taking a stroll after a birthday party said Thursday, November 3, that the two-lane road was known as a dangerous place to walk because there are no paved shoulders.
Deborah Lynn Crain, 50, was charged with vehicular homicide after a 15-year-old girl died early Wednesday, November 2. Ms. Crain said that she couldn't see the people walking.
Sergeant Jorge Delahoz of The Florida Highway Patrol(FHP) estimated Ms. Crain was driving upward of twice the speed limit -- 40 to 50 mph in a 25-mph zone at about 9 p.m., especially when it was drizzly and dark.
Ms. Crain has 15 driving citations, out of which nine are speeding tickets.
Ms. Crain said she felt a bump but did not notice her windshield was smashed, or that one of the teens ran after her, screaming for her to stop.
Brittany was dragged underneath the Jeep. Alicia Spence, 15, hit the windshield and was thrown into the legs of another friend, who was treated at the scene.
Alicia was discharged Thursday from Florida Hospital DeLand. Samantha and another girl were uninjured. They watched Ms. Crain speed away.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers and two homicide investigators with more than 30 years' experience came to conclusion that Deborah Crain could not have been impaired at the time of the accident.
