Man Charged In Hempstead Workers Compensation Fraud

March 10, 2006

A former employee of the Town of Hempstead has been charged with stealing more than $70,000 from the municipality.

James Carbone, 55, now of Tampa, Florida, has been charged with grand larceny in the second degree, a class C felony.

Carbone was employed by the town until October of 1996 when the Worker's Compensation Board for the Town of Hempstead classified Carbone as permanently partially disabled (PPD).

Despite working since May 1, 2000, at Sturm Moving Company, Incorporated in the State of Florida, prosecutors said Carbone continued to receive Workers Compensation benefits amounting to more than $70,000 from the Town of Hempstead.

The injuries that led Mr. Carbone to receive Worker's Compensation benefits were sustained to his back and right ankle, on the job, in June of 1992 and August of 1993.

Carbone surrendered to the Nassau County District Attorney's Office and was arraigned Thursday in First District Court, Hempstead. He is being represented by Ed Mandry.
