Newlyweds Die In Plane Crash During Tropical Storm

January 18, 2006

Tropical Storm Gamma is being held responsible for a plane crash that resulted in the death of an American couple flying over Belize on their honeymoon.

The pilot, Rene Ram, and his two passengers were killed after the private plane belonging to Blancaneaux Lodge fell out of the sky. The Blancaneaux lodge is an exclusive jungle resort owned by the filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola.

The two newlyweds have been identified as Douglas Scratchley Jr. and his wife Cristy Dy Scratchley of St. Petersburg, Florida, according to a spokesman from the U.S. embassy in Belize.

The couple was spending their honeymoon in Belize and the resort was planning a reception for them on Friday evening.

According to civil aviation authorities, the tropical storm was blasting the skies with heavy winds and rains which they believe were contributing factors in the accident. The plane fell from the sky and crashed into a ravine on another ranch's property.

Tropical Storm Gamma had already killed 11 people in Honduras and three in Belize. It is the 24th storm actually named in this Atlantic hurricane season.
