Federal worker-safety regulators on Wednesday said they planned to fine contractor Drawdy Brothers Construction more than $100,000 for violating standards at a Lake Worth job site.
The company received two repeat citations, with proposed penalties of $75,000, for unsafe scaffolding, a major contributor to fall-related accidents, Luis Santiago, the Fort Lauderdale area director for the Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration, said in a statement.
Drawdy's safety director said the repeat citations occurred more than three years ago.
The construction industry has been among the most hazardous in the state for worker fatalities, according to previous OSHA records.
For the two-year period ending Sept. 30, 2004, more than half the 95 workplace fatalities recorded in the 10-county South Florida area happened on construction sites, according to OSHA.
Drawdy also received eight other citations, with proposed penalties of $34,000, for exposing workers to falls through unguarded floor openings and from scaffolding that lacked proper foundations and braces to prevent tipping, OSHA said in a statement about the citations.
