The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating a steamroller accident that killed a road construction worker.
Ronald Lee Fox, 41, was shoveling blacktop material from a bulldozer bucket onto the surface of State Road 22 near Prevatt Avenue about 6 p.m. when a steamroller operator nearby accidentally put his machine into reverse and crushed Fox between the steamroller and the bulldozer, according to a Volusia County Sheriff's report. Fox was kneeling facing toward the bucket and away from the steamroller when he was crushed, so driver Lyle E. Thomas, 59, of Orlando, could not see him, the report said. Fox's cousin, John Earl Lewis, said he was able to get out of the way before the accident.
Fox has lived at the Putnam Hotel in DeLand for the past two weeks, manager Terri Jackson said. She said his family, including Lewis, came by to get his belongings. Lewis "said he screamed for him to jump the other way, but it was too late," Jackson said. "He was a very nice man." Fox worked for Middlesex Corp. in Orlando. According to OSHA records, the Orlando company does not have any accidents on file.
