Teen Driver Rams School Bus, Eleven Injured

November 11, 2005

Eleven children were taken to the hospital with minor injuries after a teenage driver rear-ended a school bus in Gibsonton, authorities said.

Hillsborough Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Debbie Carter said the school bus was stopped at a railroad crossing on Big Bend Road east of U.S. 41 at about 6:30 a.m. when Benjamin Manning, 18, of Ruskin tried to pull around the bus. Finding himself blocked by a car in the other lane, Manning then tried to pull back behind the bus and rear-ended it, Carter said.

Manning was cited for traveling too fast for conditions.

The children who were injured ranged in age from 10 to 17, Carter said. All of the injuries were minor and most of the children were taken to the hospital as a precaution, said Ray Yeakley, spokesman for Hillsborough County Fire Rescue. The uninjured children were taken to their schools, he said.
