Two people were injured when a private minibus carrying schoolchildren flipped over last Thursday, the first day of school after Hurricane Wilma.
Police said the minibus, a white 15-passenger Dodge, was going east on Northwest 175th Street when a white Hyundai Sonata hit it on the side and caused it to land on its roof. The Sonata was heading south on Northwest 35th Avenue, police said. Miami-Dade police said a stop sign on southbound Northwest 35th Avenue was not there, blown away by Hurricane Wilma.
According to Lt. Jorge Aguiar, the passengers of the minibus, were two 6-year-old boys and a 12-year-old girl. One of the boys suffered a bump on the head, Aguiar said; the other two had no apparent injuries. Aguiar said the driver of the Lucky's Transportation van, 37-year-old Kimberly Singleton, had scrapes and bruises to her knee. The boys are students at Carol City Elementary School, 4375 NW 173rd Dr., Aguiar said.
Lawanda Warren, 28, was identified as the driver of the Sonata. She was nine months pregnant. She wasn't injured, but her high blood pressure was elevated after the 8:30 a.m. accident, Aguiar said. One of the 6-year-old boys was taken by his parent to Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines, Aguiar said. The other boy, the girl and Singleton were taken there by ambulance; Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took Warren to the same hospital.
