Boat Explosion Occurs Near Space Center

August 8, 2005

NASA officials say a boat explosion just offshore from the Kennedy Space Center wasn't a security breach.

Authorities say a fishing boat exploded along the Indian River Creek just offshore from the center of the nation's space operations Wednesday.

A woman was critically injured and her husband had minor injuries.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating.

Public boating is allowed in the area.

But a NASA spokesman says access to the shoreline, part of the space center property, is restricted.
