Young Girl Killed In Head-on Auto Accident

A 10-year-old Fort Myers girl became Lee County's 101st traffic fatality this year when she was killed in a wreck on Palm Beach Boulevard. Shnelly Ortiz, 10, was killed shortly before 9:30 p.m. when the car she was riding in was hit head-on on Palm Beach just east of the Florida Power & Light plant, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said a Toyota driven by Benito Tojin-Esteves, 22, of 13311 First St., Apt. B., Fort Myers, was traveling west in the eastbound lane with no lights when it hit a Toyota driven by Marta L. Florian. Ortiz was a passenger in the car driven by Florian. Florian and three others in the car that was struck live at 13455 Second St. in Fort Myers.

Florian and a passenger in the front seat, Edgar Herrera, 46, were listed in critical condition at Lee Memorial Hospital. Timothy Florian and Hadassah Herrera, both 10, suffered minor injuries. Tojin-Esteves also was listed in critical condition at Lee Memorial. Troopers on the scene said Tojin-Esteves may have been driving drunk. Charges are pending, authorities reported.
