The director of the Port of Pensacola has been placed on administrative leave with pay while awaiting the outcome of an internal probe into several charges related to two separate traffic accidents Saturday evening, October 30.
City Manager Tom Bonfield said that Leon Walker, director of the Port of Pensacola may face two counts of driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, two counts of careless driving and driving without insurance. If convicted, he will loose his $90,000-a-year job.
Mr. Walker, 51, was charged early Sunday by Pensacola police and the Florida Highway Patrol and booked into the Escambia County Jail.
According to the arrest record, Pensacola police were called to a crash Saturday about 9 p.m. at the intersection of Interstate 110 and Fairfield Drive, but the driver of the suspect car had headed west on Fairfield.
A report came in of a second crash at the intersection of V Street and Fairfield Drive, about two miles away. A Florida Highway Patrol trooper said that the driver was taken to West Florida Hospital for a minor hand injury.
Mr. Walker told the officer he was involved in the I-110 and Fairfield traffic accident when another vehicle stopped in front of him. But he said he did not remember the other crash at V Street and Fairfield Drive.
The blood alcohol level of Mr. Walker was found to be 0.193 and 0.211 on two separate sobriety tests.
There is no indication on the report that anyone other than Walker was injured.
