A police officer responding to a burglary call was killed when he swerved to avoid another vehicle, becoming New Smyrna Beach's first to die in the line of duty, officials said.
Officer Roy L. Nelson Jr., 36, and his police dog Ceasar were pronounced dead late Saturday at the scene, just east of the South Causeway on State Road A1A, officials said.
A witness told the Florida Highway Patrol that Nelson crashed into a guardrail and overturned after swerving to avoid a white pickup truck that had pulled out in front of him.
Investigators were looking for a white, full-size pickup, possibly a 1990s Ford F-150, that left the scene.
Miller said the truck was considered a factor in the crash and the driver could face charges, though the truck and Nelson's vehicle did not appear to make contact.
