Local Woman Killed In Florida Crash

March 22, 2006

An elderly city woman was killed in Florida this week when the car her son was driving was hit head-on by another car traveling in the wrong lane, police in Lakeland, Florida said yesterday.

Lakeland Police spokesman Jack Gillen said that Mary Burckes died instantly when her son's 1991 Hyundai was hit Monday night by a Mazda driven by Alex Clayton Thrasher, 19, of Plant City, Florida.

The accident occurred about 6:48 p.m. when Thrasher turned and started driving south in the northbound lane of Sikes Boulevard, according to the police report.

The passenger in Thrasher's car, Samantha Ann Dezee, 18, told Thrasher that he was in the wrong lane.

Thrasher told police he saw Robert Burckes' car coming, but there was nothing he could do because his car was too low to the ground and could not drive over a curb. Both cars swerved and hit head-on.

Mary Burckes, 87, of 37 Clark Lane, was sitting in the passenger seat and was killed.

Her son, Robert Burckes, and another passenger, 49-year-old Barbara Burckes, sustained minor injuries in the crash and were taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance.

Thrasher and Dezee also sustained minor injuries.

The accident is under investigation and charges against Thrasher are pending, spokesman Gillen said.
