Florida Highway Patrol troopers charged a 25-year-old Austin, Texas man with driving under the influence after a crash along Interstate 275 that seriously damaged two cars and sent concrete debris flying into several other passing vehicles.
Daniel Caraway was driving a 2000 Lincoln four-door in the southbound center lane of I-275 near the Dale Mabry Highway exits when he failed to notice that traffic ahead had slowed down, according to an FHP report. He tried to quickly move to the inside lane and hit the left rear side of a freight truck driven by Vincent L. McPherson, 43, of Tampa. Both vehicles went into a spin, hitting the concrete barrier wall and then sliding back into the southbound lanes before coming to rest in the inside lanes, FHP troopers said.
Caraway suffered minor injuries, and the crash caused $10,000 in damage to his Lincoln. The truck driver was not injured, but the truck sustained about $12,000 in damage. The impact sent concrete debris flying into the northbound lanes, and several vehicles sustained minor damage as they drove by.
According to jail records, Caraway refused to tell jail officials who his employer is. He blew twice into a Breathalyzer machine, which showed blood-alcohol levels of 0.157 and 0.159 percent. In Florida, anyone with a blood-alcohol level of .08 percent or higher is considered too impaired to drive.
