Elderly Driver Steps on Wrong Pedal, Careens into Store

August 19, 2005

An 83-year-old Inverness man crashed into an ice cream parlor when he mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake. John Bradshaw went to Malley's Cafe on U.S. 41 S to buy ice cream for a friend. "I'm (upset) at myself for doing something stupid," he said.

Joan Trehy of Inverness was carrying her 8-week-old baby, Colton, in his car seat as her 6-year-old daughter, Cameron, held the door to the cafe. Trehy saw the car coming and yelled for Bradshaw to stop. She said it continued to move after entering through glass at the front of the store. The Trehys were there to buy ice cream and celebrate the last day of summer vacation.
