A Miami-Dade jury awarded $54,060 and $60,000, respectively, to a driver and passenger who were injured when their car was T-boned by a driver who ignored a stop sign in Morales v. Pou (Case no. 99-24997 CA 27).
Driver Vivian Morales, who is in her 30s, and Ampararo Rodriguez, who is in his 60s, sued Angel R. Pou, who first argued brake malfunction then admitted liability. Morales injured her knee, and her attorney had her show it to the jurors. Rodriguez also claimed a knee injury and said she now she walks with a limp. Both claimed the need for future surgeries and both sought at least $75,000 in damages. Neurologist Jeffrey Gelblum and orthopedist Stephen Wender testified for the defense that their injuries could be treated by less invasive means.
