17-car Chain-reaction Crash On I-95 Injures Many, One Boy Seriously

October 18, 2005

A chain reaction of 17 crashes in morning rush hour shut the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Brevard County for more than six hours.

An 11-year-old boy was flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center in serious condition, Trooper Kim Miller, a Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman, said. Other injuries were minor.

The first crash occurred just before 8 a.m. near State Road 520. More than 26 vehicles were involved and a gasoline tanker truck overturned onto the west median. Miller said the truck driver, Daniel Duggan of Merritt Island, lost control of the tanker when he approached the stopped traffic.

About 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel and 300 gallons of gasoline spilled onto the southbound lanes, and environmental and transportation crews spent hours offloading the fuel, Miller said. Duggan, 52, was cited for driving too fast for conditions. 'Weather did play a factor,' Miller said. 'It was raining at the time.'
